Explain the differences between the selling and marketing concepts.

Answer: The terms selling and marketing have opposite meaning and are NOT synonymous. The differences between these terms include the following:

· The selling concept places emphasis on the product, whereas the marketing concept places emphasis on customers' wants.
· With the selling concept, the company makes the product first and then figures out how to sell it, whereas with the marketing concept, the company first determines customers' wants and then figures out how to deliver a product to satisfy those wants.
· With the selling concept management is sales-volume oriented, whereas with the marketing concept management is profit oriented.
· Planning is short-run (in terms of today's products and markets) with the selling concept, whereas planning is long-run (in terms of new products, tomorrow's markets, and future growth) with the marketing concept.
· The selling concept stresses the needs of sellers, while the marketing concept stresses the wants of buyers.
