The market leader usually faces huge expenses of developing new products and markets, distributing, and educating the market. Market followers can learn from leaders' mistakes and strengths. It can copy or improve programs with less investment. It probably won't become the leader, but it will be profitable. A disadvantage is that if it gets too close, a market leader might retaliate. Easier for the leader to drive them out of business. Also, a market leader has more capital for R&D so they can come up with more products or even steal ideas of the little guys and implement them faster.
